Metaphors are nowadays perceived not only as literary devices, but are also increasingly analysed as parts of people's conceptual systems. They occur in everyday speech, texts and the media. The aim of this paper is to examine the occurrence of basic conceptual metaphors in A. Huxley's Brave New World and G. Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm, according to Lakoff and Johnson's Metaphors We Live By (1980). The total amount of basic conceptual metaphors collected is 35, according to which 327 examples from the analysed books are taken. The most frequent metaphors found are the ones related to people, their features and emotions.
